This is so sad! Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin, has died at age 76 at her home in Detroit on Thursday morning.
"In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds," the late legend's publicist told E! News
There were reports of her failing health earlier this week as family members and sources close to Her told the media that she was very ill. Franklin's publicist confirmed on Thursday that the star died from advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type per her oncologist.
Aretha made her mark as a music legend after winning a total of 18 Grammy Awards throughout her carer, and in 1987, she was chosen as the first female musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Her family have come out to provide a painful statement after she passed. "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. ‘We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time".
Aretha was born and raised in the city of Detroit in Michigan and as a kid, she started singing at the local church of her father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, in the 1950s. By the time she turned 14-years-old, she had released her first recordings as a gospel artist, and not long after, she signed her first record deal with Columbia. But she eventually left Columbia to sign with Atlantic, where she matured into her own as a professional artist. By the late ’60s, Aretha became one of the biggest and most talented international recording artists of her time, as she released ten top ten hits in the space of 18-months between early 1967 and late 1968.

Her success in the industry was like a landmark as she stood out overwhelmingly. She was a recipient of the Grammy Legend Award by Recording Academy in 1991 and won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. The queen of Soul was nominated and emerged winner of what was her first and only Golden Globe Award for "Best Original Song" in 2007 titled "Never Gonna Break My Faith" and she featured in movies like The Blues Brothers and its 1998 sequel.
There is no doubt that Aretha's success so far has been limitless. In 1987, she became the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and at age 52, she was the youngest award winner at the time she received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1994.
Aretha performed at the inaugurations of three United States presidents. The most recent was for former President Barack Obama in 2009. And in 2005, she was granted the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President George W. Bush.
Besides her personal struggles with her weight throughout most of her life and being a longtime smoker, Aretha’s health had been degenerating for some time, following several medical procedures, and her rumored battle with cancer. She officially retired as a singer due to personal reasons and obviously because live performances started to prove difficult for her to handle. Her last performance was in November 2017, when she did a live performance at Elton John’s AIDs Foundation concert in New York City.
Our condolences goes out the the family and loved ones of this great legend. We say Rest In Peace Aretha Franklin.
